Sauropterygia--> Eosauropterygia
The clade Eosauropterygia includes all sauropterygians excluding the placodonts. The placodonts are considered the most basal ('primitive') members of the clade Sauropterygia. The term 'basal sauropterygian' is often applied to non-plesiosaurian sauropterygians.
